Florida is currently figuring out the exact amount of damages caused by BP's (NYSE:BP) oil spill. In the mean time, they want an "interim" payment from the company in the amount of $1 billion. The reasoning being to help offset a looming budget deficit for the state.
Some of the losses being claimed are tax revenues, oil cleanup, among other damages. Governor Charlie Christ, Florida's governor, has already secured $32 million for the state since April 20th. The money was used for advertising through various media outlets, including TV and Internet to promote tourism and the safety of their beaches.
"Florida's damages as a state could easily be in the billions of dollars. We just don't know and its going to be years before we know the long term impact from the spill. But in the meantime we'd like reparations to get relief, so we don't have budget shortfalls directly from BP's wrong doing," said Tampa lawyer C. Steve Yerrid.

BP's (NYSE:BP) Hayward Denies Oil Plumes Exist
BP (NYSE:BP) has said many things, Tony Hayward is now saying that the oil plumes don't exist, but scientist are saying they do. This seems to just be another attempt by BP to try and not take responsibility for their actions.
Scientist say there are several deadly oil plumes that have been spotted in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the scientists, they were created by the combination of the oil, gas, and chemical dispersants unleashed into the Gulf. The plumes create what's called dead zones where there is no oxygen and nothing can survive in or around them.
There is one oil plume only 35 miles from Florida's shore in the Panhandle. There is another plume 22 miles long and 6 feet wide that reaches to a depth of 3,300 lingering in the Gulf. As well as also the first plume to be discovered that is 10 miles long, 3 miles wide, and 300 feet deep. Other plumes remain in deeper waters.
What BP is trying to prove by continuing to lie isn't for certain. Considering there is proof of the existence of the oil plumes caused by the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Tracking Bonnie Headed Towards BP (NYSE:BP) Oil Spill Site
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, tropical storm Bonnie is South of the Bahama's and is heading toward the southern tip of Florida - straight to BP's (NYSE:BP) oil infested waters.
It is on track to hit the Florida Keys tomorrow at 6:15pm at 40 miles per hour. The storm is expected to gain strength as it hits.
The storm is being watched carefully by forecasters to see what it will do as it enters the Gulf and if its on track to hit directly over the BP oil spill site. Jeff Masters, co-founder of weather underground, said that tropical storm winds hitting 50 MPH would force oil into the Louisiana marshes as well as into Lake Pontchartrain.
Travis Hartman, energy manager and meteorologist said, "Oil production in the central to western Gulf should monitor this system for possible increases in intensity, but most rigs can withstand tropical storm force winds fairly well."

BP (NYSE:BP) LIAR, LIAR: Florida Beaches Closed
BP (NYSE:BP) oil seems to want to keep on pretending, by saying things like there are no oil plumes, or that they'll pay off everything and everyone involved with their failure to contain the oil, or how about the fact they are eventually going to file bankruptcy. All the while, the effect of this oil has reached Florida and they are closing their beaches.
Florida has closed over 6 miles of their white sand beaches. What used to be a beautiful beach front filled with bustling tourist staying at Florida's beach resorts this time of year, are now desolate and the white sands are stained with the evidence of the ongoing environmental disaster. Not to mention the massive layoffs that are sweeping the area.
When just days ago BP officials were publicly declaring that Florida would escape the impact of oil upon their shorelines. On Wednesday they were still insisting there are no oil plumes yet the testing done by government showed there are large plumes of crude oil as far as 3,000 feet down. BP seems to be taking a stance of "lets pretend, make believe, or liar liar." Or perhaps they're simply trying to fool the public.
Ken Salazar, The Interior Secretary told U.S. Congress he now expects BP on top of everything else, to pay for canceled salaries of anyone unexpectedly without work because of the six month memorandum on deep ocean drilling.

BP (NYSE:BP): Enviromental Site Assessment of Oil Spill Containment in Florida
The estimates were correct, BP's (NYSE:BP) oil had hit the white sand beaches of Florida as the sun was rising many were at the shorelines to see. There are many people in place keeping a close eye on the oil spill containment efforts as well as experts giving their environmental site assessment of the situation.
Health officials are saying to stay out of oily water and away from the oil on the shorelines. They did say that getting a little water polluted with the oil on the skin or even swallowing a little, does not need to result in a trip to the emergency room. Although oil is considered toxic, short exposures should result in very minimal symptoms. Being exposed long term and in large quantities could cause problems like trouble breathing, concentrating and coordination, as well as a higher risk of cancer.
This is expected to put a big halt to what would be Florida's prime tourist season, the white sand beaches are one of Florida's most popular tourist areas. This is also affecting businesses like restaurants as well. No people means no business. Restaurants have already cut back to their Winter staff and are not hiring.

BP (NYSE:BP) Setback, Oil Slick Almost To Florida
It took BP (NYSE:BP) 12 hours on Wednesday to free the saw that was stuck half way through the pipe they were cutting. Although, they did not give a time when they would resume their oil spill containment attempt, they did say they were preparing.
Meanwhile, the oil slick is within seven miles of Pensacola, Florida, ready to hit the area known as the sugar white beaches. Emergency workers are rushing to get the mile long boom link, designed to collect the oil, in place before the oil slick reaches the shoreline. Forecasters say the estimated arrival time for the slick is Friday.
As we've already seen what devastation the oil slick has caused in Louisiana, the outcome doesn't look any better for Florida. As well as the white sands beaches which inhabit much wildlife, there are also several Islands and bays that will feel the effects of the oil.
John Dosh, emergency director for Escambia County, which Pensacola is included in, said, "we are doing what we can, but we cannot change what has happened."
There has been much extra aid sent to the East Coast including boats, helicopters, and more staff. The helicopters will help spot oil in the water. The boats will help skim oil as well as place extra booms where needed to collect the oil.

BP (NYSE:BP) Spill Containment As Oil Rages Towards Shorelines
As BP's (NYSE:BP) oil spill containment efforts continue on, the already spilled oil continues its course into the ocean and towards the shorelines. The latest predictions are saying the oil could hit near the Mississippi Sound as well as the coastline near the mouth of Mobil Bay.
"We are working around the clock to keep the oil off the shoreline and have had the gift of time to plan for its arrival," said Capt. Steven Poulin, incident commander for the Coast Guard. "The projections are of concern. This is a dynamic situation influenced by a wide variety of environmental factors, so while we're not certain where or what the impact will be, but we're prepared."
The Unified Incident Command in Mobil said it has aggressively increased air and sea surveillance. In place are additional beach support teams on shore as well. There are also over 6,000 people taking part in the response effort on the shorelines and in open water in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
As oil cleanup efforts are being highly increased, BP said earlier today that it has already spent $990 million on cleaning and fighting the oil spill. This amount doesn't include the many lawsuits for damages.

BP (NYSE:BP): 22 Mile Long Oil Plume Heading To Florida
Off the BP (NYSE:BP) work site, a 22 mile long and 6 mile wide oil plume has been discovered by the University of South Florida college of Marine Sciences researchers. They say it is preparing to enter a underwater canyon. The effects of this would be devastating.
This massive plume is dangerously close to entering a large underwater canyon, once the crude oil enters this canyon the plants and animals that feed larger organisms will be bathed in a toxic chemical and oil soup. This canyon is responsible for fueling the food chain off the Gulf in Florida.
David Hollander, associate professor of chemical oceanography said, "the plume was detected just beneath the surface down to about 3,300 feet." He said their team found the thickest amounts of hydrocarbons at around 1,300 feet below in the same spot on two separate days this week.
Further testing by the researchers is planned to determine if the hydrocarbons they discovered are from the emulsification of oil or results of dispersants used as they made their way from the well into the sea.
