It seems that BP's (NYSE:BP) efforts on their oil spill containment are proving quite successful. After the success of the cap being put into place last week, the questions been how much crude is being captured. As well as when is the secondary spill containment cap attempt is going to be completed. BP didn't have an exact date, but did say that they are going to attempt to put the second cap into place next week.
BP said Tuesday that a ship on the surface is collecting the oil that is being captured. On Monday, 620,000 gallons of oil was contained. On Tuesday, between midnight and noon there was already 330,000 gallons collected. So based on the governments estimate of 600,000 to 1.2 million gallons being lost daily, that would be over half the crude being captured and contained.
Whatever the actual amount of oil being deposited into the ocean is, the bottom line is it still has to end up somewhere. BP is planning on bringing in a storage vessel and floating production, which officials are saying may be the answer. "It's being brought in because it can handle far more oil than this well is producing," said BP spokesman Robert Wine. Although he does not know when its planned arrival is or where it is going to be coming from.

Halliburton (NYSE:HAL): We're Not Responsible For Spill Containment or Spill Cleanup
Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) seems to be under the impression they are absolutely absolved of all responsibility in the current oil spill containment efforts. Rep. Edward Markey wrote letters to all companies involved in the hazardous oil spill requesting contributions to an independent science fund, they got the "cold shoulder" from Halliburton and no funds were given. BP on the other hand offered, within three days a $500 million commitment.
"Halliburton is apparently more worried about litigation than scientific investigations," said Rep. Markey, who is one of the chairman of the Energy and Environmental Subcommittee. "In order to prevent catastrophes like this from ever occurring again, this disaster needs to be a teachable, researchable moment. Halliburton seems more worried about their own impeachable moment."
Tim Probert, Halliburton's president responded personally to Markey by letter yesterday. He stated that he did not believe their company was one of the responsible parties for the oil spill cleanup. Despite the fact Halliburton was the company who had been working on the cement plug that failed on the Deepwater Horizon.

BP (NYSE:BP): No To Cameron's Offer To Assist In Oil Spill Containment
You would think BP (NYSE:BP) would take all the help they can get, but they turned down Cameron's offer to assist in the oil spill containment effort. Cameron, the director in Avatar and Titanic is known for his campaigning for environmental protection.
Cameron said, "over the last few weeks I've watched, as we all have, with growing horror and heartache, watching whats happening in the Gulf and thinking those morons don't know what there doing." He made it apparent his specialty isn't in deep sea expertise, or in drilling for oil. He claims to know people that are very good in electronic optical fiber and operating underwater vehicles.
"I know really, really, really smart people that work typically at depths than what that well is at. Most importantly, they know the engineering that is required to get something done at that depth," said Cameron. He said today that BP "graciously" turned down his offer.
BP has said they've received thousands of ideas on how to stop the hazardous spill. These ideas have come from the everyday person to big corporations.

BP (NYSE:BP): Enviromental Site Assessment of Oil Spill Containment in Florida
The estimates were correct, BP's (NYSE:BP) oil had hit the white sand beaches of Florida as the sun was rising many were at the shorelines to see. There are many people in place keeping a close eye on the oil spill containment efforts as well as experts giving their environmental site assessment of the situation.
Health officials are saying to stay out of oily water and away from the oil on the shorelines. They did say that getting a little water polluted with the oil on the skin or even swallowing a little, does not need to result in a trip to the emergency room. Although oil is considered toxic, short exposures should result in very minimal symptoms. Being exposed long term and in large quantities could cause problems like trouble breathing, concentrating and coordination, as well as a higher risk of cancer.
This is expected to put a big halt to what would be Florida's prime tourist season, the white sand beaches are one of Florida's most popular tourist areas. This is also affecting businesses like restaurants as well. No people means no business. Restaurants have already cut back to their Winter staff and are not hiring.
It's also said, you no longer smell the salty ocean air. It's now replaced with only a stagnant oil smell.

BP (NYSE:BP) UPDATE Oil Spill Containment, A Partial Success
After much dissatisfaction and anger about BP's (NYSE:BP) inability to contain the oil spill, causing an incredible drop in oil investments, there has been at least a partial success. BP was successful in placing the cap on top of the pipe they were able to cut. The problem remains that the pipe was not a clean cut, thus causing the cap to not fit snug. So the spill containment efforts must go on because there is still oil coming out from around the cap.
Thad Allen, the Coast Guard Administrator issued by the government said, "even if successful this is only a temporary and partial fix and we must continue our aggressive response operations at the source, on the surface and along the Gulf's precious coastline."
Doug Suttles, BP's chief operator stated it wouldn't be until later on in the day before they knew the amount their spill containment system was capturing. "There is flow coming up the pipe, just now I don't know the exact rate," said Suttles.
Even though the underwater robots were successful with putting the lid onto the leaking oil pipe, watching the live oil spill video doesn't show much of a change as far as the oil flow. Suttles did say that the cause of this oil flow that we are seeing is probably because of the four vents that were put into place intentionally so as to prevent ice crystals from forming, thus blocking the funnel. BP is planning on closing all four vents at the same time to see if this will decrease the amount of oil still pouring into the ocean. As of now there isn't an exact time this will take place.

BP (NYSE:BP) Setback, Oil Slick Almost To Florida
It took BP (NYSE:BP) 12 hours on Wednesday to free the saw that was stuck half way through the pipe they were cutting. Although, they did not give a time when they would resume their oil spill containment attempt, they did say they were preparing.
Meanwhile, the oil slick is within seven miles of Pensacola, Florida, ready to hit the area known as the sugar white beaches. Emergency workers are rushing to get the mile long boom link, designed to collect the oil, in place before the oil slick reaches the shoreline. Forecasters say the estimated arrival time for the slick is Friday.
As we've already seen what devastation the oil slick has caused in Louisiana, the outcome doesn't look any better for Florida. As well as the white sands beaches which inhabit much wildlife, there are also several Islands and bays that will feel the effects of the oil.
John Dosh, emergency director for Escambia County, which Pensacola is included in, said, "we are doing what we can, but we cannot change what has happened."
There has been much extra aid sent to the East Coast including boats, helicopters, and more staff. The helicopters will help spot oil in the water. The boats will help skim oil as well as place extra booms where needed to collect the oil.

BP (NYSE:BP) Stuck Saw Stalls Oil Containment Effort
As many are hoping and waiting for a positive outcome from BP (NYSE:BP) on their recent cap attempt, their progress is now stalled due to a saw that is stuck over a mile below in the broken pipe. So now again, the progress of containing the oil has stopped.
Thad Allen, Coast Guard Administrator, said on Wednesday that the plan is to free the stuck saw today, and then finish the cut sometime later on in the day. Even though it seems that there is one snag after another, Allen was optimistic, he said they were successful overnight with the first cut using giant sheers.
Experts fear and have warned that this current oil spill containment attempt could be even riskier than previous attempts. The reason for this is as they push on with their fuel containment systems, cutting open the riser could potentially make the oil spill worse. Especially if there was a kink that had been restricting some of the flow of oil.
Ed Overton, a Louisiana State University professor of environmental sciences said, "it's an engineers nightmare. They're trying to fit a 21 inch cap over a 20 inch pipe a mile away. That's just horrendously hard to do. It's not like you and I standing on the ground pushing, they're using little robots to do this."

BP (NYSE:BP) UPDATE: Oil Spill Containment, Live Oil Spill Video
Many are keeping a close watch on BP's (NYSE:BP) live oil spill video and the progress of the oil spill containment. Bob Dudley, BP's Managing Director said on NBC'S the Today Show, "we are well into the operation to put this cap on the well now." As well as their current spill containment operation, which includes attempting to attach another pipe on the blowout preventer, just in a different opening, there is a secondary spill containment effort being considered.
BP is also wanting to construct a new free standing riser, the purpose of which would be to carry the oil to surface, making it more efficient. Plus, with hurricane season already started, the new riser would make it very easy to connect and disconnect the containment pipes as needed due to bad weather. This will not start until well into June.
Watching BP's live oil spill video on Tuesday, it shows robot submarines using circular diamond saws cutting the pipe. The government is estimating 20 million and 44 million gallons of oil already lost, there's no telling what the final numbers will be.
"I don't want to put odds on it, we want to get this thing contained," said Carol Browner, Obama's energy czar, on ABC's Good Morning America. President Obama's administration is closely watching all aspects of the process from temporary fixes, to the oil cleanup efforts, as well as the progress of the relief wells.
